How Much YouTube Pays per 1,000 Views in 2026
The short answer: for 1,000 views of a long video, YouTube usually pays the creator $1 to $10; for Shorts, it’s cents. The range is huge because the topic, the viewers’ country and the video’s length decide everything. Below: where the number comes from, medians by niche and a calculator.
In short. Across 300 channels tracked by AIR Media-Tech from May 2025 to May 2026, median creator earnings per 1,000 views (RPM) ranged from $0.33 for kids’ content to $10.22 for education and science; most topics land at $2–3. So 1,000,000 views on long videos usually means $2,000–10,000, while a million Shorts views brings in tens of dollars.
CPM vs. RPM: what’s the difference
- CPM — what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. It’s the ad price before YouTube’s cut, and it only counts views where an ad actually ran.
- RPM — what the creator earns per 1,000 video views: all of them, including views with no ads, and after YouTube’s cut. That’s why RPM is always lower than CPM.
On long videos, YouTube gives creators 55% of ad revenue. With Shorts, revenue goes into a shared pool that’s split among creators by their share of views, and the creator keeps 45% of their portion. You can see your own RPM in YouTube Studio → Analytics → Revenue once the channel is in the Partner Program.
How much different niches pay
The most honest numbers aren’t “advertiser rate cards” but real data from YouTube Studio. AIR Media-Tech published medians across its 300 channels (3,595 monetized “channel-months,” May 2025 – May 2026):
| Niche | Median RPM | Median Studio CPM |
|---|---|---|
| Education & Science | $10.22 | $5.91 |
| Transport* | $5.69 | $5.88 |
| Lifestyle | $2.98 | $5.32 |
| News & Politics* | $2.60 | $4.51 |
| Entertainment | $2.43 | $3.98 |
| Crafting & Handmade | $2.39 | $3.42 |
| Gadgets & Tech | $2.33 | $5.73 |
| Music | $2.28 | $4.05 |
| Food & Cooking* | $2.25 | $4.04 |
| Gaming | $2.05 | $4.05 |
| Business & Finance* | $2.01 | $4.84 |
| Health & Sport | $1.23 | $3.54 |
| Kids & Teens | $0.33 | $1.59 |
* Fewer than ten channels in the sample — the figure is approximate. Source: AIR Media-Tech, 2026. When RPM is higher than CPM, as with education, it usually comes down to long videos: a single view carries several ad impressions, and YouTube Premium revenue is added on top.
A median is the midpoint: half the channels in a niche earn less, half earn more. English-language documentary channels with a US audience often beat the table; channels aimed at viewers in Ukraine, India or Brazil come in lower.
What your earnings depend on
- Viewers’ country. Ads for viewers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany and Scandinavia cost several times more than for Ukraine, India or Brazil. What counts is the viewer’s country, not the channel’s.
- Topic. Advertisers pay for the audience: education, technology, finance and business cost more than entertainment and gaming.
- Video length. Videos of 8 minutes or longer can carry mid-roll ads, so each view gets more impressions.
- Retention. The longer people watch, the more ads they get to see.
- Season. Ads get pricier in October–December (holiday budgets) and cheaper in January.
- Share of views with ads. With ad blockers, in kids’ mode and in some countries, there are no ads at all.
How much YouTube pays for 1,000,000 views
Earnings = views ÷ 1,000 × RPM. For a million views:
| RPM | Typical for | Per 1,000,000 views |
|---|---|---|
| $0.03–0.20 | Shorts | $30–200 |
| $1 | entertainment for audiences with cheap ads | $1,000 |
| $2.50 | the median for most niches | $2,500 |
| $5 | documentaries and science for a mixed audience | $5,000 |
| $10 | education and science, English-speaking audience | $10,000 |
How much YouTube pays for Shorts
Shorts pay dozens of times less: estimates from various services put it at $0.03–0.20 per 1,000 views. Ads run between Shorts, not inside them, revenue is shared among all the creators in the feed, and part of it goes to music licensing. Shorts are great for reach and subscribers, but long videos bring in the main income of a faceless channel. Shorts cut from a long video are a free way to send viewers to it.

This is an estimate, not a forecast or a promise of income: you’ll only know your channel’s RPM in YouTube Studio after monetization, and it can differ from the median several times over. The team price per video is a ballpark — change it to your own.
How to earn more per 1,000 views
- Make videos for English-speaking viewers — in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. You don’t have to move: what matters is who’s watching.
- Long videos of 10–25 minutes with several ad breaks.
- Topics with pricey ads: science, technology, history, business — instead of memes and gaming.
- Retention: a strong hook, chapters, new details every 45–75 seconds.
- Consistency: YouTube recommends channels that post on a schedule more often.
- Other income streams: sponsors, affiliate links, channel memberships — for documentary channels, these often bring in more than ads.
Frequently asked questions
How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views outside the US?
It depends on where your viewers live. If a channel is in a local language and is watched mostly from a market with cheaper ads — like Ukraine, India or Brazil — its RPM usually sits in the lower part of the table above: advertisers pay less to reach those viewers than to reach Americans. That’s why many creators outside the US make English-language channels for viewers in the US and Europe.
How many views do you need to make $1,000 a month?
At a $4 RPM, 250,000 long-video views a month; at a $10 RPM, 100,000. With Shorts, the same amount takes tens of millions of views.
Does YouTube pay for subscribers?
No. YouTube pays for ad impressions and a share of Premium subscriptions, and there are also paid channel memberships, Super Thanks and Super Chat. Subscribers matter for getting into the program and for views, but on their own they don’t earn money.
When and how do you get paid?
Once a month through Google AdSense, once your balance reaches at least $100 (the payment threshold). A month’s earnings are usually finalized early the following month, and the payment arrives in the second half of that month.
Why did my RPM drop?
Most often it’s the season (January after December), your audience shifting to other countries, short videos without mid-roll ads, or limited ads on certain videos (the yellow icon in Studio).
